We had been driving almost an hour.
Tish had asked for coffee when I stopped to grab some food, but other than that, sheâd been silent. Not quietâsilent. It was unnerving.
As the rural landscape sped by, she stared outside as if mesmerized.
With every passing mile, my tension grew. I hadnât slept worth shit, waking up every couple of hours. Once when Iâd woken, she hadnât been there. Iâd thought she was in the bathroom, but a quick look showed the door to the small bathroom to be open and the light was out.
After about ten more minutes, Iâd gone to look for her. Iâd heard her footsteps on the stairs.
Iâd slipped back into the room so we wouldnât wake anybody else and had been about to suggest something that might help us both sleep. Then Iâd seen her face and wished Iâd just stayed in bed.
Even thinking back to those terse, awkward moments made the muscles in my neck knot up. Iâd taken the cowardâs way out and ducked into the bathroom.
When I came out, she was in bed, and if she wasnât asleep, she had clearly wanted me to think she was.
Iâd hoped Iâd been misreading things, but her quiet mood wasnât making me feel any better. I had a bad feeling I knew what was wrong, and I couldnât avoid it forever.
The letter carefully folded and tucked inside my suitcase was practically sending me subliminal messages. No, not subliminal. I was fully aware of these messages, so what did that make them? Liminal? I had no idea.
Asking her to come with me had probably been a mistake, but I hadnât wanted her thinking I was focused on chasing Isabelâs killer down solely out of a need for revenge either.
I wasnât still in love with Isabel. I had feelings for her, yeah. I always would.
She had been my wife, and I would always love her and value the memories of what little time weâd had together, but I wasnât the guy who had fallen in love with Isabel anymore. I didnât even know if Isabel could love the guy I was now.
And me? The man I was nowâ¦could I have loved her?
I had no idea.
Next to me, Tish sighed. The soft, forlorn sound made my throat knot up.
This was driving me crazy.
So do something.
âThanks for going with me,â I said, blurting the words out like the geekiest kid asking the prom queen on a date.
Tish glanced over at me. âYouâre welcome.â
âI mean, really. Iâm glad you were with me. I kind of needed you there.â Tightening my hands on the wheel, I forced myself to continue. âIt was hard enough as it was, but you made it a little easier. So, thank you.â
Tish squirmed, clearly uncomfortable. âI donât know about that. You handled it fine. But I was happy to go with you.â
There was a note in her voice that made me question thatâat least the happy part. But I didnât push. âListen, about that letter. Iââ
âWe donât need to talk about that,â she interjected, her voice nervous and strained.
